Gold Spot

Gold prices fell more than 1% to a one-month low while palladium sank nearly 9% on Tuesday, as signs of progress in Russia-Ukraine peace talks dented demand for precious metals. Moscow has decided to drastically cut its military activity around Kyiv and Chernihiv in Ukraine, one of its deputy defence ministers said after talks between Russian and Ukrainian teams in Istanbul. Hopes for an end to the conflict now in its second month lifted risk sentiment in wider financial markets.

Shanghai tightens Covid-19 lockdown on second day of curbs

China's most populous city tightened the first phase of a two-stage Covid-19 lockdown on Tuesday, asking some residents to stay indoors unless they are getting tested as the number of new daily cases exceeded 4,400. The financial hub of Shanghai, home to 26 million people, is in its second day of a lockdown authorities are imposing by dividing the city roughly along the Huangpu River, splitting the historic centre from the eastern financial and industrial district of Pudong to allow for staggered testing.

Japan says communicating closely with U.S. on FX issues as yen hits 6-year low

Japan and the United States agreed to closely communicate on currency issues, Japan's top currency diplomat said on Tuesday in the wake of the yen's decline to six-year lows against the dollar. Vice finance minister Masato Kanda's remarks underscore Japan's growing concern over recent steep yen declines, which have drawn complaints by some lawmakers for inflating already rising import costs for energy and food. The yen weakening accelerated on Monday after the Bank of Japan moved to contain rising bond yields, even as most other major central banks including the U.S. Federal Reserve were tightening monetary policy.

Oil drops on Ukraine peace talk hopes, China demand fears

Oil prices dropped on Tuesday, extending losses from the previous day as Ukraine and Russia headed for peace talks and on fears of a drop in fuel demand in China after the financial hub of Shanghai shut down to curb a surge in COVID-19 cases. Ukraine and Russia were set to meet in Istanbul on Tuesday for their first peace talks in over two weeks. Sanctions imposed on Russia after it invaded Ukraine have curtailed oil supply and earlier this month sent prices to 14-year highs.

Bloomberg,, Reuters
