Gold Spot

Gold prices rose on Thursday after comments by U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell cemented hopes around a lower interest rate environment, while prospects of more U.S. stimulus further lifted bullion’s appeal as an inflation hedge. Powell said an interest rate hike is coming “no time soon” and pushed back against suggestions that the central bank might start tapering its bond purchases any time soon.

President-elect Joe Biden unveils plan to pump $1.9 trillion into pandemic-hit economy

President-elect Joe Biden unveiled a $1.9 trillion stimulus package proposal on Thursday, saying in prime-time remarks that bold investment was needed to jump-start the economy and speed up the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic. The aid package includes $415 billion to bolster the response to the virus and the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, some $1 trillion in direct relief to households, and roughly $440 billion for small businesses and communities particularly hard hit by the pandemic.

U.S. weekly jobless claims jump on COVID-19, renewed supplementary payments

The number of Americans filing first-time applications for unemployment benefits surged last week, confirming a weakening in labor market conditions as a worsening COVID-19 pandemic disrupts operations at restaurants and other businesses. The larger-than-expected increase in weekly unemployment claims reported by the Labor Department on Thursday was seen by some economists as driven by the recent renewal of supplemental jobless benefits, but nonetheless raised the risk of further job losses in January after nonfarm payrolls slumped in December for the first time in eight months.

South Korea central bank leaves policy rate unchanged

South Korea’s central bank kept its policy rate unchanged on Friday, as a partial recovery in Asia’s fourth-largest economy allowed policymakers to stay on the sidelines. The Bank of Korea kept the base rate steady at a historic low of 0.5%. The BOK is expected to maintain its easy monetary policy in 2021 even with the economy accelerating away from last year’s pain brought on by the coronavirus.
