Gold Spot

Gold inched up in choppy trade on Wednesday as concerns over economic growth boosted the metal’s safe-haven appeal ahead of U.S. inflation data that could guide the Federal Reserve’s rate hike timeline. Although seen as an inflation hedge, gold is sensitive to interest rate hikes which increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion. Gold was also benefiting from some safe-haven flows driven by increased economic growth concerns amid deteriorating risk appetite, said Edward Moya, senior analyst with OANDA.

Wall Street falls with U.S. Treasury yields above 3%

U.S. stocks fell on Wednesday as Treasury yields rose above the psychologically important 3% level and oil prices jumped, fanning worries about inflation and the outlook for interest rates. The S&P 500 ended down more than 1% in the broad sell-off, snapping a two-day winning streak. Investors are also cautious ahead of U.S. consumer price data on Friday morning. The report is expected to show that inflation remained elevated in May, though core consumer prices - which exclude the volatile food and energy sectors - likely ticked down on an annual basis.

Dollar gains as U.S. stocks fall, ECB decision on tap

The dollar index gained on Wednesday, reversing earlier declines as U.S. equities fell and boosted the appeal of the safe haven, while the euro strengthened ahead of a European Central Bank policy announcement. The greenback reached a fresh two-decade high against the yen, which weakened to hit 134.47 per dollar, its softest since Feb. 27, 2002, and the euro achieved its highest level against the safe-haven yen since Jan. 5, 2015.

India's RBI hikes rates as inflation pressures build; drops 'accommodative' from stance

The Reserve Bank of India's key interest rate was raised by 50 basis points on Wednesday as widely expected, the second hike in as many months, in a bid to cool persistently high inflation in Asia's third-largest economy. The central bank also dropped its long-standing phrase that future policy would remain 'accommodative', reinforcing expectations of further rate hikes and other forms of tightening in coming months as fighting inflation becomes its main focus.

Bloomberg,, Reuters
